How to use Free Pro 2.5 from Gemini CLI?

I am trying to understand the legality of using these OAuth solutions with a client key that is clearly not meant to be used by other tools. In addition to that none of the providers explicitly allow (I think) using these oauth flows outside their CLIs, I merged in the github copilot implementation but even that is very questionable since I do not know if the copilot API is allowed to be used like that.

Would love to know from someone who knows better if using these auth flows with clientIds that are not meant for other tools is problematic.

I know it is possible to add the same thing for anthropic and copilot also but just am struggling to understand if this is going to be an issue long term.

It won't be as useful as you think @aryadytm . Even in Gemini cli the 2.5 pro (free) usage is limited and it returns 429 responses as soon as hits the the rate limits. Then it switches back to 2.5 Flash which you anyway can get with the Gemini API keys for free.

@akwin1234 I agree. The launch was hype but they seriously fumbled the debut. They should have expected a hoard, 1000 messages a day is wild.

I'm not going to ask too many question for now and just hop back on Cline for now while this is working.

@kujtimiihoxha I agree the legality is hard to reason about. You could use the tool programmatically (gemini -p "query") and probably be okay. And since the code is open source, it is possible to just use the same code that is used for OAuth and it will work. But will it violate any API terms of service in that case? The tool itself is open source, but you are using the API outside of its intended purpose.
